Pros and cons

Pros
  • Free checked bag

  • Early boarding

  • Rewards don't expire

Cons
  • Has annual fee

  • Requires good/excellent credit

For frequent Delta travelers, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card is a relatively low-cost way to earn lots of extra SkyMiles. You'll get 2 miles per dollar spent on Delta purchases, on top of the miles you earn for being a member of the SkyMiles frequent flyer program (5 to 11 miles per dollar, depending on status). All other purchases with the card earn 1 mile per dollar. The card offers a generous welcome bonus, too: Earn 70,000 bonus miles after you spend $2,000 in purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months. Terms Apply. The annual fee is $0 intro for the first year, then $99.

On top of those competitive earnings, the card boasts no blackout dates on Delta flights and gives travelers the option to redeem points starting at 5,000 miles, a fraction of the welcome bonus. This isn’t the best card for people who rarely travel or want to redeem miles on other domestic airlines, but if Delta’s your carrier of choice, it could save you a bundle.
