Our writers and editors follow strict editorial guidelines that ensure fairness and accuracy in order to help you choose the financial products that work best for you. In our pet insurance reviews, our editorial team considers both the customer and the insurer. These are some of the factors we take into account:

Plans offered. Pet insurance companies generally offer the following three types of plans:

  • Accident and illness policies reimburse you for medical treatment if your pet gets sick or injured.

  • Accident-only policies pay expenses if your pet is injured.

  • Wellness plans help you budget for preventive care costs.

Breadth of coverage. We looked for plans that cover a wide range of potential expenses.

Range of plan options. This category looks at how many ways you can customize what you pay for your plan and how you’re reimbursed.

Can pay your vet directly. This indicates whether an insurer can pay your vet directly for medical expenses. With this service, you don’t have to pay the money yourself upfront and then wait for reimbursement.

Figo vs. competitors

Here’s how Figo stacks up against three other popular pet insurance companies.

Figo vs. Healthy Paws

Both Figo and Healthy Paws offer accident and illness policies with the option to choose an unlimited annual limit and a low $100 deductible.

Compared with Figo, Healthy Paws pet insurance offers fewer coverage options to choose from. It doesn’t offer a wellness package, or the option to cover exam fees, prescription diets, behavior modification or euthanasia and burial costs— all things Figo offers coverage for. Healthy Paws also caps its coverage on pets over the age of 14, while Figo has no age limit.

Healthy Paws’ coverage for hip dysplasia is limited to pets under six years old at the time of enrollment, and it doesn’t offer 100% reimbursement like Figo does. But Healthy Paws does give the option to have your vet paid directly, a convenient feature Figo doesn’t provide.

Figo vs. Trupanion

Both Figo and Trupanion pet insurance offer accident and illness plans with unlimited annual limits. But Trupanion doesn’t offer wellness coverage, which means things like parasite control, vaccinations or getting your pet spayed or neutered aren’t covered.

Trupanion doesn’t offer a 100% reimbursement option like Figo. You can only choose to be reimbursed for 90% of expenses in most states, while Florida pet owners can choose between 50% to 90% reimbursement.

The way Trupanion’s deductible works is unique. Unlike Figo, which has an annual deductible that applies to all accidents or illnesses in a given year, Trupanion’s deductibles apply to individual conditions and don’t restart each year. That means if your dog needs regular medication, you’ll only need to pay the deductible for that medication once, as opposed to once per year with Figo.

Trupanion offers a zero deductible option, and pet owners in Florida will have no deductible at all. The lowest deductible Figo offers is $100.

Figo vs. Nationwide

Unlike Figo which offers an unlimited annual coverage limit option, Nationwide pet insurance plans all have an annual limit of $10,000. Nationwide also has less generous reimbursement options, with a 70% maximum reimbursement, while Figo has three higher coverage options, up to 100% reimbursement for vet bills.

Figo has more types of coverage than Nationwide. For example, Nationwide doesn’t provide coverage for getting your pet spayed or neutered, prescription food or behavioral therapies, which Figo does.

Figo also offers a 24/7 live chat with a veterinarian, which Nationwide doesn't.

Yes, Figo covers hip dysplasia. There is a six-month orthopedic waiting period before coverage begins.

Methodology

NerdWallet’s pet insurance ratings reward companies for customer-first features and practices. Ratings are based on weighted averages of scores in several categories, including financial strength, coverage, plan options, discounts and more. Our “consumer experience” category looks at factors such as website transparency and how easy it is to file a claim. To calculate each insurer’s rating, we adjusted the scores to a curved 5-point scale. See our full pet insurance methodology.

These ratings are a guide, but we encourage you to shop around and compare several insurance quotes to find the best rate for you. NerdWallet does not receive compensation for any reviews. Read our editorial guidelines.
