Who are the AA?

Originally established in 1905 as the Automobile Association, the AA has gone from a small motoring group helping drivers to avoid speed traps to the UK’s largest motoring organisation with over 15 million members and over 2,900 dedicated mobile mechanics. Though their main focus is breakdown assistance, the AA provides a range of motoring, leisure and financial products and services. The AA has the largest fleet of dedicated breakdown vehicles out of all the UK breakdown providers.

What is AA breakdown cover?

With AA breakdown cover, you’ll get assistance at the roadside from a trained mechanic if your car, van or motorcycle breaks down. They’ll either fix your vehicle and get you back on the road or tow your vehicle to a mechanic for further assistance.

What types of vehicle does AA breakdown membership cover?

The AA’s recovery products covers most types of vehicle including cars, classic cars, vans, motorbikes and caravans.

What is covered with a basic AA breakdown cover policy?

AA’s basic ‘Roadside Assistance’ product usually includes:

24/7 cover for breakdowns if you are over 1/4 mile from home
a tow to a nearby garage if they are unable to sort things at the roadside
unlimited amount of call-outs

Extra can be added to the policy to suit your unique circumstances.

The following won’t be covered:

roadside assistance after a breakdown or accident that has meant the emergency services have been called
routine maintenance and running repairs outside a breakdown
repeat call-outs for the same fault

What breakdown cover packages are available from the AA?

AA breakdown cover starts with the standard Roadside Assistance product, to which you can add a number of optional extras. The add-ons are:

National Recovery: This adds the option to have your vehicle transported to your choice of UK destination if it can’t be fixed.
At Home: This option provides cover should your vehicle break down at home, or within ¼ mile from your home.
Onward Travel: This add-on provides a range of travel or accommodation options if your car cannot be repaired.
Parts and Garage Cover: This provides financial cover to help with parts and garage bills incurred after a breakdown.

AA recovery policies can be purchased to cover individuals, couples, families or specific vehicles.

What is covered with AA breakdown repair cover?

While a standard breakdown cover policy will cover you for a roadside assistance call-out, you will still have to pay for the cost of repairs and parts used to get you back on the road. Breakdown ‘repair’ cover, however, is a type of policy or add-on that covers you financially for those additional costs.

AA breakdown repair cover is called ‘Parts and Garage’ cover and is available as an optional add-on to their standard breakdown cover policies. The cost will depend on the age, model and mileage of your vehicle, but will cover 5 claims per policy year (6 if you have a joint or family policy that covers more than one vehicle. If you want to speak to the AA about renewing your policy you can contact them via phone or online. The AA also offers an automatic renewal option for customers to have their policy roll over once the term ends.
