Breakdown Cover – Personal Cover FAQs
If you’re considering taking out a breakdown cover policy, you need to decide whether you want to cover your vehicle or yourself. If you opt for personal cover, you as a driver are covered. This means that you can make callouts whenever you break down, within your policy’s limits, regardless of which vehicle you are driving or, indeed, whether you are driving at all.
What is personal breakdown cover?
Taking out a personal breakdown cover policy means that you as an individual will have support in the event of a breakdown. Therefore, if you break down when driving a hire car, your partner’s car, or a friend’s car, you can still call out the engineers to try to get you on the road again. In fact, even if you are simply a passenger, most policies will honour your callout. The level of service and cover you receive will depend on the type of policy and the level of service you have taken out and they vary enormously, so it’s important to check the details of your policy carefully.
What does personal breakdown cover include?
This varies from policy to policy so be sure to check the details of the cover you are considering taking out. Most breakdown providers offer various levels of service within their breakdown cover for a named driver.
These include:
- Roadside assistance
- Home start service
- National recovery
- Onward travel
- European cover
What level of personal breakdown cover do I need?
This depends on your personal circumstances. If you drive long distances regularly, you might want to consider national recovery, which will help recover you and your vehicle regardless of where you are in the UK. If your car often fails to start, you might want to take out ‘home start’ to ensure you can get going in the first place.
Onward travel and European cover are add-ons that many people opt for particularly if they are driving a long way from home, like on holidays and when driving in Europe. These levels of cover can help you to continue your onward journey, help your passengers get to where they need to go and even get your car fixed when on the Continent. However, each policy varies enormously in terms of what is and isn’t included, so check the details of what your cover includes before signing up.
Is personal breakdown cover helpful for everyone?
As personal breakdown cover is often more expensive than vehicle cover, think carefully about whether it is right for you. Some people find it helpful if they live in a household with more than one car and share use of those cars. Additionally, it can also prove helpful if you find that you drive various vehicles for work, or hire cars regularly.
