Vehicle Breakdown Cover FAQs

What is vehicle breakdown cover?

Vehicle breakdown cover means that a specific vehicle, as opposed to the person driving that vehicle, is covered in the event of a breakdown. Whoever is driving the car at the time of a breakdown is able to request roadside assistance from the vehicle breakdown cover provider. The level of cover depends on the policy taken out for the vehicle.

Who might want to take out vehicle breakdown cover?

Vehicle breakdown cover is often the preferred choice for households with just one car. If you have a single car and either one driver or several drivers that use the car, vehicle breakdown cover could well be the cheapest option for you. Often, families living in urban areas or with limited parking may have just one car between them and vehicle breakdown cover might, therefore, be the best option.

Are there advantages to vehicle breakdown cover compared with personal breakdown cover?

Vehicle breakdown cover is often cheaper than personal breakdown cover. If the named car breaks down, anyone driving that car is able to call out for roadside assistance and recovery. However, if you, as a driver, are driving a different car and it breaks down, you are unable to avail yourself of your breakdown cover policy.

What types of vehicle breakdown cover are there?

As with other types of breakdown cover, there are various levels of vehicle breakdown cover to choose from. It is important to consider factors such as the condition and age of your vehicle, as well as where it is driven before making a decision as to what level of cover you need.

The most basic cover is roadside assistance only, which entitles you to request roadside recovery anywhere in the UK, but will only recover you to a garage near to where you break down. If you would like a policy that includes recovery to a garage near your home and possibly onward journey cover for yourself and passengers, you’ll need national recovery.

Home start vehicle breakdown cover policies are popular with people who would like to be able to request recovery if their car won’t start at home, or very near to home. This level of cover could help you get on the road or may allow your car to be towed to a nearby garage for repairs.

Those looking to take their named car to Europe may want to consider adding European breakdown cover to their vehicle breakdown cover policy. This helps the driver of the car, as well as the car itself and often the other passengers, to continue a journey to anywhere in Europe and will also often help you and the car return home.

When might vehicle breakdown cover not be appropriate?

If a household has more than one car that family members drive, it might be cheaper to take out personal or joint/family breakdown cover, as opposed to taking out vehicle breakdown cover. However, drivers that have access to more than one car at home may also consider a multi car vehicle breakdown cover policy, which will include several cars on a single policy.
